The supply chain begins upstream with fluorochemical raw materials (e.g., fluorspar → hydrogen fluoride → fluorinated intermediates), followed by electrochemical fluorination (ECF) or related processes to produce perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride (POSF), which is then hydrolyzed to PFOS or converted into downstream derivatives; midstream involves formulation into surfactants, wetting agents, or specialty chemicals for industrial use; downstream sectors historically included aerospace, electronics, textiles, and fire protection, but today the market is largely limited to tightly controlled exemptions and environmental remediation activities, with supply dominated by legacy producers and a shift toward safer PFAS alternatives due to regulations such as the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
